Welcome to Bali: A Paradise with Strict Cyber Rules

Bali, with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, is a top destination for travelers seeking a unique experience. Amidst the scenic beauty and cultural richness, it's crucial for visitors to be aware of Indonesia's Information and Electronic Transactions Laws (ITE), among the strictest in the world. These laws dictate what can and cannot be broadcast online, on television, or in the media.

The ITE laws cover various aspects of daily life online and in communication. For tourists, it's vital to be mindful of specific areas to ensure a trouble-free stay. These laws encompass online conduct, respect and privacy in communication, cybercrime, defamation, hate speech, and content related to drugs and other illicit activities.

While there have been several updates to the ITE laws for 2024, the most significant aspect for tourists to be aware of is the government's commitment to taking legal action against individuals intentionally broadcasting, displaying, distributing, transmitting, or making accessible electronic information or documents that violate decency for public knowledge.

Content falling under the umbrella of "decency for public knowledge" includes a wide range, from nudity and violence to drugs. Critiques related to culture, religion, politics, communities, or even individuals are also considered violations. This places a responsibility on visitors to exercise caution when engaging in online activities, sharing content, or expressing opinions.

Notably, the government, in collaboration with the Indonesian Parliment, has introduced two new articles – Article 27A and Article 27B – within the ITE legislation. These additions further emphasize the commitment to maintaining decency and respect in the online sphere.

Tourist Tips for Compliance

  1. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay in Bali, visitors are advised to:
  2. Exercise Caution Online: Avoid sharing content that may be deemed offensive or violate decency standards.
  3. Respect Local Culture: Be mindful of cultural sensitivities when expressing opinions about religion, politics, or communities.
  4. Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with the latest updates to ITE laws to stay compliant with local regulations.
  5. Privacy Matters: Respect the privacy of individuals when sharing images or information online.

While Bali offers a paradise-like experience, it is essential for visitors to appreciate the cultural and legal landscape. By adhering to the ITE laws, tourists can contribute to a harmonious coexistence, enjoying the beauty of Bali while respecting the values and regulations that make it unique.

As the saying goes, "Respect is how to treat everyone, not just those you want to impress." Enjoy your stay in Bali responsibly!

KEY TIP

Article 27A states that “every person [who] intentionally attacks the honor or good name of another person by accusing [them] of something, with the intention of making the matter known to the public in the form of electronic information and/or electronic documents carried out through an electronic system.”

This one is particularly important to pay attention to as it could be used against tourists who turn to social media to complain about experiences with people in Bali or accuse a local person of wrongdoing, however small or significant the claim.
